Articles::Week 1 Useful Waiver Pickups (September 8, 2006)

Here are a few players that are probably still available on the waiver wire that you can pickup and use this week if you've already run into injury issues.

1. Jon Kitna, QB, Detroit Lions
Jon Kitna should put up decent passing stats with the Lions most likely playing from behind and being forced to pass often. He may throw an interception or two but he should still throw at least one touchdown to even that out. Kitna was not drafted in most leagues so he can most likely still be picked up and used for a spot start this week if you need a quarterback.

2. Wali Lundy, RB, Houston Texans
With Domanick Davis going on injured reserve for the season, Lundy will get the first chance to win the starting job. He may not be one of the top running backs in league but if you need a running back to start for a few weeks, he will fill in nicely since he will get the majority of the carries in Houston.

3. Doug Gabriel, WR, New England Patriots
The trade from Oakland to New England greatly helped Doug Gabriel's fantasy football status. He was a third receiver with potential in Oakland but the trade to New England lets him step into a starting position with Deion Branch's extended holdout. He may not be available in all leagues but if he is, pick him up and watch him develop into a quality fantasy football player this year.

4. Joe Klopfenstein, TE, St. Louis Rams
Who? Not many people should be saying this when the season is done. He's the rookie tight end in St. Louis with a great chance to be the starter this season. He has great hands and the ability to get open and will be a great target for Marc Bulger. Get him while you still can!

5. Stephen Gostkowski, K, New England Patriots
Gostkowski is the rookie kicker in New England that made Martin Gramatica expendable during the Patriot's training camp. For a rookie, Gostkowski has been impressive and made all of the pressure kicks. Granted that all of the kicks were in the preseason, it was still a pressure packed situation for Gostkowski since he was kicking for a job. Keep an eye on him, he may be huge this season.
